Witnesses, take action.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"regular\">In collaboration with community organizations, we are raising public awareness with a campaign titled \u201cStreet harassment&nbsp;: stop it. Witnesses, take action.\u201d to inform people on how to recognize street harassment and what to do if they witness it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Witnesses play an important role<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"regular\">In just over half of reported incidents, nobody stepped in to help the target<a   class=\"note-bas-de-page\" name=\"top_note1\" aria-label=\"Link to the footnote #1\" href=\"#note1\">*<\/a>.&nbsp;We all need to come together to fight street harassment.&nbsp;The first step is raising awareness.&nbsp;The downplaying of street harassment is part of why the problem still exists and why this behaviour is seen as normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"regular\">Getting involved can be intimidating.&nbsp;Take action in whatever way you feel most comfortable.&nbsp;It doesn\u2019t matter what you decide to do\u2014even small actions can make all the difference.&nbsp;The important thing is to learn how to recognize street harassment and take action as a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"arrow\">\n<li class=\"last-item\"><a href=\"\/en\/witnesses-5-things-you-can-do\/\" data-type=\"page\">5 things you can do<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-4 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safe public spaces for all<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"regular\">Everyone has the right to move freely in public spaces, regardless of gender, nationality, age, social status, ability, skin colour, religion or sexual orientation.&nbsp;The City of Montr\u00e9al has been working to fight street harassment for a number of years.&nbsp;It intends to continue preventing street harassment to ensure a welcoming, tolerant and violence-free city for all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>City of Montr\u00e9al actions for a safe and equitable city<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"disc\">\n<li>City council declaration against sexualized violence (2018)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation in UN Women\u2019s global initiative \u201cSafe Cities and Safe Public Spaces\u201d (2019)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for community initiatives to prevent sexualized violence in public spaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial support for the development of quantitative research on street harassment in Montr\u00e9al (2021)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparation and distribution of a guide to safe urban planning principles, <span class=\"fr\">\u201cCr\u00e9er des lieux publics o\u00f9 l\u2019on se sent en s\u00e9curit\u00e9\u201d<\/span>&nbsp;[Creating public spaces where people feel safe] (2022), advocating for the design of safe infrastructure and public spaces for girls, women and the general public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"last-item\">City council declaration to strengthen the fight against street harassment in Montr\u00e9al (2022)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-6 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>STM actions for a welcoming public transit network<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"undefined disc\">\n<li>Between Stops service expanded to be available to anyone travelling alone or with a child between 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. year-round. The service was established by the STM in 1996.&nbsp;It was initially for women only but was expanded in September 2022.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Front-line staff made aware of empathetic ways to interact with targets and witnesses of harassment,&nbsp;as well as how to report an incident and direct customers to help and support services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"last-item\">STM special constables tasked with patrolling facilities.
